About Dan Ortiz

An Independent Alaskan, State Representative Dan Ortiz was elected to the Alaska House of Representatives in November 2014. He serves Alaska House District 36 which is comprised of Hydaburg, Hyder, Ketchikan, Loring, Metlakatla, Saxman and Wrangell.

Dan grew up in Ketchikan and graduated from high school in 1976. He left briefly to attend college in Washington and Wisconsin, but returned to Alaska to build his home, marry his wife Lori, and raise a beautiful family.

As an adult, Dan worked as a fisherman, house painter and tour guide, but it was in the career field of education where he thrived. For over 30 years Dan taught AP Macro Economics, AP U.S. History and J.A. Economics at Ketchikan High School. During that time, he also coached Kayhi’s cross-country and drama-debate-forensics (DDF) teams. During this time, he achieved many accomplishments:

  • VFW Teacher of the Year: In recognition of civic responsibility, flag etiquette and patriotism.
  • American Legion Teacher of the Year (2012-2013)
  • Ketchikan High School Graduate (1976)
  • Seattle Pacific University, Bachelor’s Degree (1981)
  • University of Wisconsin, Master’s Degree (2001)

As Alaska State House Representative for District 36, Dan Ortiz serves on the House Community & Regional Affairs Committee and the House Transportation Committee. He also serves on the Special Committees for Fisheries as well as Economic Development, Tourism, & Arctic Policy. Dan is an independent, intelligent, responsible and collaborative voice for all of District 36.
